CINNAMOW Starts!

It is a great pleasure to inform you that the CINAMOW project, funded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) has started!

In this project we will reconstruct Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene (~3.4 to ~2.3 Ma) physicochemical variations in the Mediterranean Overflow Water (MOW) as well as climate variability in the Iberian Margin during the initiation of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation (NHG).

This study will provide new insights into one of the major climate transitions in past Earth climate which involves a shift from the warm Pliocene climate, with high greenhouse gases concentrations, to a colder climate characterized by high amplitude oscillations between glacial and interglacial periods.

In order to perform our project we are studying sediments from Site U1391, recovered from the Southwest Iberian margin during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 339.
